Innes's paintings are rhythmically meditative, the result of a process that involves the repeated removal as well as application of paint. Calm and authoritative, they nevertheless bear the traces of the controlled chaos of their production, of the creative and destructive interaction of paint and turpentine. With authoritative texts and extensive illustrations, this publication brings together the major themes and preoccupations of Innes's practice over the last fifteen years. Paintings from his earliest Cento series Quotations, Agitated Verticals, Isolated Forms, Repetitions, Formed Paintings, Identified Forms, Monologues, Resonances and Shellac Paintings join a substantial body of Exposed Paintings, from the earliest to the most recent, and explore the development of the artist's visual language.

Der schottische Maler Callum Innes (*1962 in Edinburgh) gehört zu einer Gruppe von Lehrenden an der Glasgow School of Art, die sich mit den grundsätzlichen Problemen von »light, gravity & space« auseinander setzen. Innes selbst konzentriert sich dabei in seiner viel beachteten Arbeit auf die Aspekte Fläche und Farbe und widmet sich den Möglichkeiten des monochromatischen Farbauftrags auf Leinwand. Er mischt seine Ölfarben selbst und erzeugt durch eine spezielle Technik von Addition sowie Subtraktion, durch die »Enthüllung« der präparierten Oberfläche vermittels Terpentin - eines flüssigen wie fließenden Lösungsmittels -, subtilste Farbnuancierungen. Das Prozesshafte seiner Kunst, der Zeitfaktor bleibt so sichtbar. Innes hat diese für ihn spezifischen Exposed Paintings seit 1994 konsequent weiterentwickelt und erreicht in seinen Bildern eine rätselhafte, meditative, ja spirituelle Qualität.
